Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie Bowl

Photo placeholder: cinnamon roll topped with skillet apples in a shallow bowl

All the satisfaction of apple pie without making a crust, because the cinnamon roll already brought the pastry and the cinnamon. This is a good November recipe and an even better use of apples that have been in the bowl a little too long.

Ingredients

  • 2 cinnamon rolls
  • 3 apples, peeled and sliced (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Optional: vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. 01

Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the apples and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. 02

Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and lemon juice. Cook 6 to 8 more minutes, until the apples are tender and the syrup thickens.

  3. 03

Warm the cinnamon rolls and set each in a shallow bowl.

  4. 04

Spoon the hot apples and all of their syrup over the rolls.

  5. 05

Add ice cream if you want the full pie-à-la-mode effect, then drizzle with warmed icing.

Tips

  • Keep the apple slices thick, about 1/4 inch, so they hold their shape instead of turning to sauce.
  • A splash of apple cider in the skillet at the end deepens the flavor.

Variations

  • Add cranberries in the last 3 minutes for tartness and color.
  • Swap in pears and a little cardamom.
