Cinnamon Roll à la Mode

Photo placeholder: plated cinnamon roll à la mode with caramel sauce and ice cream

The restaurant version: a warm cinnamon roll, a scoop of ice cream, a sauce, and a plate that looks like someone in the kitchen cared. It takes eight minutes and it is what to make when guests stay later than you planned.

Ingredients

  • 2 cinnamon rolls
  • 4 scoops vanilla bean ice cream
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Pinch of flaky salt
  • Optional: toasted pecans

Instructions

  1. 01

Make the sauce: melt the butter with the brown sugar in a small pan over medium heat, stir until dissolved, then add the cream. Simmer 2 to 3 minutes until it coats a spoon. Add the salt.

  2. 02

Warm the cinnamon rolls in a 300F oven for 6 minutes.

  3. 03

Set each roll on a plate, add two scoops of ice cream alongside.

  4. 04

Spoon the warm caramel over the roll so it runs into the swirl.

  5. 05

Finish with toasted pecans and a little more flaky salt.

Tips

  • Warm the plates for 30 seconds in the oven. It keeps the roll warm while you serve.
  • Make the sauce first so nothing has to wait.

Variations

  • Espresso caramel: add 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso to the sauce.
  • Swap the caramel for warm berry compote to cut the richness.
