Can You Freeze Cinnamon Rolls?

Yes, and they freeze better than most baked goods. Wrap them individually, freeze up to three months, thaw at room temperature, then warm.

Yes — and it works well

Baked cinnamon rolls freeze very well because the dough is enriched with fat and sugar, both of which protect texture in the freezer. The key is wrapping them properly and freezing them while they are still fresh.

How to freeze baked rolls

  1. Cool completely. Freezing a warm roll traps steam and makes it soggy.
  2. Wrap each roll tightly in plastic wrap or foil.
  3. Put the wrapped rolls in a freezer bag and press the air out.
  4. Label with the date. Use within three months.

If you can, freeze the icing separately in a small container and add it after warming.

How to thaw

Unwrap and let the roll sit at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours, then warm it for 12 to 15 seconds in the microwave or 8 minutes in a 300F oven. You can also go straight from frozen to a 300F oven for 15 to 18 minutes, covered in foil.

What freezing cannot fix

Freezing preserves; it does not improve. A roll that was already dry on day three will be a dry frozen roll. Freeze on day one.

Freezing a whole tray

Wrap the pan in plastic and then foil, and reheat covered at 325F for 25 to 30 minutes. Good for holidays when you want one thing off your list early.
